Global Nickel Ore Resources & Production Distribution
Global nickel resource distribution is highly concentrated, mainly divided into laterite nickel ore and sulfide nickel ore. Laterite nickel ores account for over 60% of global proven reserves, concentrated in low-latitude regions such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Cuba and Brazil. Sulfide nickel ores are mainly distributed in high-latitude countries including Australia, Canada and Russia.
According to 2025 USGS data, global nickel reserves exceed 140 million metric tons. Indonesia ranks first worldwide with 62 million metric tons, accounting for 44.3% of the global total. Australia and Brazil also possess abundant nickel reserves. In contrast, China’s domestic nickel reserves are approximately 4.4 million metric tons, accounting for only 3.4% of the global total, mainly concentrated in Gansu, Qinghai and Xinjiang regions.
