Alloy 800 (UNS N08800 / 1.4876) is a nickel-iron-chromium superalloy designed for reliable service in high-temperature and corrosive environments. With a fully austenitic structure, this material maintains stable mechanical properties and resists common degradation mechanisms such as oxidation, carburization, and chloride stress-corrosion cracking.

2. Operating Conditions & Selection Criteria
Engineers select Alloy 800 (UNS N08800 / 1.4876) when standard stainless steels cannot meet the combined demands of heat and corrosion. The alloy's high nickel and chromium content provides a protective oxide layer that remains adherent under thermal cycling.
Temperature Range: Effective for continuous service up to 980°C (1800°F); suitable for intermittent exposure up to 1150°C (2100°F).
Corrosion Resistance: Resists oxidation, carburization, and nitriding atmospheres. The high nickel content provides immunity to chloride stress-corrosion cracking and sigma phase embrittlement.
Structural Stability: The austenitic microstructure resists grain growth and phase transformation during prolonged high-temperature exposure, ensuring consistent mechanical performance over time.
3. Fabrication & Material Comparison
Incoloy 800 bridges the gap between stainless steels and higher-nickel alloys, offering good fabricability with enhanced high-temperature properties.
Machining: Work-hardens during cutting; requires rigid setups and positive feed rates. Carbide tooling recommended for production runs.
Welding: Readily welded using GTAW (TIG), SMAW (stick), and GMAW (MIG) processes. Matching filler metals (such as ERNiCr-3) maintain corrosion resistance and mechanical properties in the weld zone.
Forming & Heat Treatment:
Hot Working: 871-1232°C (1600-2250°F)
Annealing: 982°C (1800°F) followed by air cooling
Cold Working: Responds well to standard shop forming operations
Material Alternative: Compared to 304/310 stainless steels, Incoloy 800 offers superior resistance to chloride attack and high-temperature creep. When compared to Alloy 600, it provides similar performance at a lower cost point for many applications.
