Alloy 188 (UNS R30188 / 2.4683)  is a cobalt-nickel-chromium-tungsten superalloy containing a small lanthanum addition (0.02-0.12%) that significantly enhances oxide scale adhesion and oxidation resistance. Designed for prolonged high-temperature service, it delivers an exceptional combination of creep strength, thermal stability, and resistance to hot corrosion up to 1095°C (2000°F). This alloy is extensively used in gas turbine combustion hardware, afterburner components, and industrial furnace fixtures .

2.Fabrication & Material Comparison

Alloy 188 offers good fabricability with proper techniques, though its rapid work-hardening rate requires attention during forming.

  • Solution Annealing: 1177°C (2150°F) × rapid air or water quench; supplied in this condition .

  • Hot Working: 1177-1232°C (2150-2250°F); reheat as necessary; rapid cool after final working .

  • Cold Working: Rapid work-hardening rate; frequent intermediate annealing (1177°C) required for complex forming .

  • Forging: 1177°C (2150°F) soak, rapid cool; typical practice for forging stock .

  • Machining: Can be machined using standard methods for iron-based alloys; water-based coolants recommended for high-speed operations .

  • Welding: Excellent weldability using GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), resistance, and electron beam welding. Pre-weld cleaning essential .

  • Material Comparison:

    • vs. Haynes 25 (L605): Similar cobalt base with lanthanum addition for superior oxidation resistance; higher nickel content .

    • vs. Haynes 188 vs. 25: 188 offers better long-term oxidation resistance due to La; 25 has higher tungsten .

    • vs. Inconel 625: Cobalt base vs. nickel base; higher temperature capability; different corrosion resistance profile .

    • vs. Nimonic 263: 188 optimized for combustion hardware; 263 for rotating components .

3. Applications

  • Aerospace & Jet Engines: Combustion chambers, flame holders, afterburner liners, transition ducts, spray bars, burner cans

  • Industrial Gas Turbines: Land-based power generation combustion hardware, transition pieces

  • Heat Treating Equipment: Furnace fixtures, muffles, radiant tubes, retorts

  • Chemical Processing: High-temperature reactor components, catalyst grid supports

  • Industrial Heating: High-temperature structural components, thermocouple sheaths
