ISO 5832-6 specifies the characteristics of, and corresponding test methods for, wrought cobalt-nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy (UNS R30035) for use in the manufacture of surgical implants. This alloy composition has been successfully used in human implants, and long-term clinical experience has shown an acceptable biological response.

UNS R30035 is a nickel-cobalt-based multiphase alloy system with a unique combination of properties, including extremely high strength, toughness, ductility, and excellent corrosion resistance. The alloy is produced using vacuum induction melting (VIM) followed by vacuum arc remelting (VAR) to ensure superior cleanliness and homogeneity.

The alloy can be strengthened and aged to achieve strength values of up to 1793-2086 MPa (260-300 ksi) with excellent stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance, even in hydrogen sulfide environments.

UNS R30035 is specified for surgical implant applications requiring the highest combination of strength, corrosion resistance, toughness, and long-term biocompatibility.

  • Biocompatibility: ISO 5832-6 / ASTM F562 approved for surgical implants; long-term clinical experience has shown an acceptable biological response in human implants

  • Ultra-High Strength: Through cold work and aging, achieves tensile strength of 260-300 ksi (1793-2086 MPa)

  • Corrosion Resistance: Excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion caused by seawater, chloride solutions, and other corrosive environments, including mineral acids (nitric, hydrochloric, sulfuric acid)

  • SCC Resistance: Excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance, even in hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) environments

  • Toughness & Ductility: Maintains good toughness and ductility even at ultra-high strength levels

  • Non-Magnetic: Low magnetic permeability (< 1.01)

  • Melting Quality: VIM + VAR double melting ensures superior cleanliness and freedom from non-metallic inclusions
