MP35N is an age-hardenable nickel-cobalt-chromium-molybdenum superalloy offering a unique combination of ultra-high strength (up to 300 ksi tensile), exceptional toughness, ductility, and outstanding corrosion resistance. It maintains properties from cryogenic temperatures up to 600°F (315°C) and exhibits excellent resistance to seawater, sour gas (NACE MR0175), and body fluids. This alloy is the preferred material for medical implants, aerospace fasteners, and oil & gas downhole tools .

2. Fabrication & Material Comparison

MP35N (UNS R30035) requires specific processing to achieve its unique combination of properties.

  • Annealing: 1066°C (1950°F) × 15-30 minutes, rapid cool (water quench preferred) .

  • Cold Working: Good ductility in annealed condition but high work-hardening rate; strength increases significantly with cold reduction .

  • Age Hardening: 482-593°C (900-1100°F) × 4-6 hours, air cool; 566°C (1050°F)/4h typical. Performed after final cold working for maximum strength .

  • Welding: Preferred method is TIG (GTAW) with low heat inputs; weld in annealed condition; post-weld cold working and aging required to restore full strength .

  • Machining: Work-hardens rapidly; requires rigid setups, sharp tools, low speeds, high feed rates, and ample coolant .

  • Material Comparison:

    • vs. 316L Stainless: Significantly higher strength (300 ksi vs. 80 ksi); superior corrosion resistance in chlorides; specified where 316L fails .

    • vs. Inconel 625: Higher achievable strength through age hardening; comparable corrosion resistance .

    • vs. Titanium Alloys: Higher strength; similar biocompatibility; higher modulus preferred for certain medical applications .

    • vs. 17-7PH: Superior corrosion resistance; higher strength potential; more expensive .

3. Applications

  • Medical: Orthopedic implants (hip stems, knee components), prosthetic devices, guidewires, catheters, surgical instruments

  • Oil & Gas: Downhole tools, valves, completion equipment, wireline components for HPHT sour wells

  • Aerospace: Fasteners, landing gear components, engine parts, hydraulic actuators

  • Marine: Seawater handling equipment, offshore platform hardware

  • Industrial: High-strength fasteners, springs, instrumentation components
