AMS 5878 specification covers a corrosion- and heat-resistant alloy (Alloy 230 / Haynes 230 / UNS N06230) in the form of sheet, strip, and plate. Alloy 230 is a nickel-chromium-tungsten-molybdenum alloy that combines excellent high-temperature strength, outstanding resistance to nitriding environments, and excellent long-term thermal stability. Due to its combined properties, it is very well suited to a wide variety of component applications in the aerospace and power industries.
Specifications & AvailableAlloy 230 is one of the highest-performing commercially available solid-solution-strengthened nickel alloys for continuous high-temperature service, maintaining useful strength to 1149°C (2100°F) with outstanding oxidation resistance and long-term microstructural stability. The alloy is easily fabricated and has very good forming and welding characteristics. Haynes Alloy 230 is solution treated at 1177-1246°C (2150-2275°F) followed by rapid cooling and is supplied in this condition. Available Forms: Sheet, strip, plate; also billet, bar, wire, forging stock, welding products, pipe, and tubing Specifications: AMS 5878 (sheet/strip/plate), AMS 5891 (bar/forgings), ASTM B435, UNS N06230, Werkstoff Nr. 2.4733
Fabrication Solution Annealing: 1177-1246°C (2150-2275°F), rapid cooling (water quench or accelerated air cool) Hot Working: 1177-1232°C (2150-2250°F); reheat as necessary Cold Working: Good formability in annealed condition; can be hot worked and cold worked Machining: Similar to other nickel-base alloys; requires rigid setups, sharp tools, and adequate coolant Welding: Excellent weldability using GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), and resistance welding; matching filler metal recommended
ApplicationsGas Turbine Components: Combustion cans, transition ducts, flame holders, burner components, afterburner parts Aerospace: Jet engine hot section hardware, exhaust systems, thermocouple sheaths Power Generation: Industrial gas turbine components, combustor liners, transition pieces Heat Treating: High-temperature furnace fixtures, radiant tubes, heat-treating baskets Chemical Processing: High-temperature reactor components, catalyst grid supports Thermal Processing: Equipment requiring outstanding thermal stability and oxidation resistance
