AMS 5860 specification covers a corrosion and moderate heat-resistant steel (Custom 455 / UNS S45500) in the form of sheet, strip, and plate. This martensitic age-hardenable stainless steel offers an exceptional combination of high strength and good corrosion resistance.

Alloy 455 is relatively soft and formable in the annealed condition, yet through a single-stage aging treatment it develops an exceptionally high yield strength while retaining good ductility and toughness. This alloy is primarily used in applications where martensitic stainless steels fail in terms of corrosion resistance, and standard austenitic stainless steels fail in terms of strength requirements in corrosive environments .

1. Product Specifications & Physical Data

Custom 455 is a precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steel that achieves its high strength through a simple single-stage aging treatment. It is available in sheet, strip, and plate forms for applications requiring high strength with good corrosion resistance.

  • Available Forms: Sheet, strip, plate .

  • Specifications: AMS 5860, ASTM A693, UNS S45500, Werkstoff Nr. 1.4543 .

2. Fabrication & Material Comparison

  • Annealing (Condition A): 1024-1052°C (1875-1925°F) × 1 hour, water or oil quench; produces soft, formable condition .

  • Aging: 482-621°C (900-1150°F) × 4 hours, air cool; single-stage treatment develops full strength .

  • Hot Working: 1150-1177°C (2100-2150°F); soak at temperature, then cool and fully anneal .

  • Cold Working: Can be cold worked using all common techniques; good formability in annealed condition .

  • Machining: Use positive feeds and slow speeds to achieve good results; carbide tooling recommended .

  • Welding: Can be welded using resistance and shielded fusion techniques (GTAW); after welding, the alloy can be aged to attain good properties.

3. Applications

  • Aerospace Components: Structural brackets, actuator housings, engine components requiring high strength and corrosion resistance

  • High-Strength Fasteners: Bolts, nuts, screws, and rivets for corrosive environments

  • Chemical Processing Equipment: Pumps, valves, and fittings where strength exceeds austenitic capabilities

  • Marine Hardware: Components exposed to seawater where martensitics corrode and austenitics lack strength

  • Medical Devices: Surgical instruments and implantable devices requiring high strength and corrosion resistance

  • Industrial Tooling: Molds, dies, and tooling requiring good corrosion resistance and high hardness

  • Oil & Gas: Downhole components, valve stems, wellhead equipment
