904L is a high-nickel (23-28%), high-molybdenum (4-5%) super-austenitic stainless steel with copper addition (1-2%), specifically formulated for exceptional resistance to non-oxidizing acids, particularly sulfuric and phosphoric acid. It offers superior resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking compared to 304L and 316L, making it the preferred material for chemical processing, acid production, and pollution control equipment operating in aggressive environments .

 2. Fabrication & Material Comparison

  • Heat Treatment: Solution anneal at 1090-1175°C (2000-2150°F), rapid water quench; cannot be hardened by heat treatment .

  • Hot Working: Forge at 1150-1200°C (2100-2190°F); reheat as necessary; rapid cooling after working recommended .

  • Cold Working: Good formability; can be readily bent to small radius in cold condition; subsequent annealing not required for most applications, but recommended under severe SCC conditions .

  • Machining: Good machinability using standard methods; low sulfur content requires careful attention to tooling and feeds .

  • Welding: Excellent weldability using all conventional methods; no pre-heat or post-weld heat treatment required; 904L filler recommended; caution required for constrained weldments to avoid hot cracking .

  • Material Comparison:

    • vs. 316L Stainless: Superior resistance to sulfuric acid; better pitting and crevice corrosion resistance; higher cost justified for severe service .

    • vs. 254 SMO: Lower molybdenum (4-5% vs. 6-6.5%); 904L offers better sulfuric acid resistance due to copper; 254 SMO better for extreme chloride pitting .

    • vs. AL-6XN: Lower nickel and molybdenum; 904L selected specifically for non-oxidizing acid service .

    • vs. Alloy 20: Comparable performance in sulfuric acid; 904L offers better overall corrosion resistance in mixed environments .
