AMS 5936 is an SAE International aerospace material specification covering corrosion‑resistant steel in the form of bars, wire, forgings, and forging stock. The alloy designated under this specification is UNS S46500, commercially known as Custom 465® or 465 stainless steel (European equivalent 1.4614).

Custom 465 is a vacuum‑melted (VIM + VAR) martensitic precipitation‑hardenable stainless steel, first introduced to the aerospace industry by Carpenter Technology Corporation in 1997. This alloy was developed to meet the demands of the most severe applications, offering ultimate tensile strength in excess of 250 ksi (1724 MPa) in the overaged H950 condition, making it one of the highest‑strength precipitation‑hardening stainless steel long products available today.

Compared to conventional precipitation‑hardening stainless steels such as Custom 455 or 13Cr‑8Ni, Custom 465, when overaged to the H1000 condition, delivers a superior combination of strength, toughness, and stress‑corrosion cracking resistance. Hot & Cold Working

Hot Working: Solution anneal first, then heat to 1010–1093°C (1850–2000°F) and air cool
Cold Working: Excellent formability for cold drawing and rolling in Condition A

Standard Heat Treatment Procedure

Solution Annealing: Heat to 982°C ±8°C (1800°F ±15°F), hold for 1 hour; rapid quench for sections under 12 inches, fast air cool for larger sections.
Cryogenic Treatment: Cool to -73°C (-100°F), hold for 8 hours, then return to room temperature. Must be completed within 24 hours after solution annealing to avoid performance deviation.
Aging Hardening: Reheat to 482–621°C (900–1150°F), hold 4–8 hours; air cool for sizes ≤3 inches, liquid quenching for larger sizes to achieve customized H950/H1000 tempered strength.
