AMS 5617L specification covers two grades of premium aircraft-quality, corrosion-resistant steel (Custom 455 / UNS S45500) in the form of bars, wire, and forgings in the solution heat treated condition, as well as forging stock. This martensitic age-hardenable stainless steel offers an exceptional combination of high strength, good corrosion resistance, excellent ductility, and toughness. Alloy 455 is relatively soft and formable in the annealed condition, yet through a single-stage aging treatment it develops exceptionally high yield strength while retaining good ductility and toughness .
1. Product Specifications & Physical DataCustom 455 is a martensitic stainless steel that achieves its high strength through precipitation hardening during a single aging treatment. The alloy is available in solution heat treated condition (Condition A) and in various aged conditions (H900, H950, H1000, H1050) depending on strength requirements. Available Forms: Bar (round, square, hex), wire, forgings, forging stock . Size Limitation: Standard product limited to 6.00″ (152.4 mm) diameter or thickness; when tested in H1000 condition, limited to 8.00″ (203.2 mm) . Specifications: AMS 5617L, ASTM A564 Type 4, UNS S45500, Werkstoff Nr. 1.4543 .

2. Fabrication & Material ComparisonSolution Annealing (Condition A): 843-899°C (1550-1650°F) × 30 minutes, air cool or oil quench; produces soft, formable condition . Aging: 482-566°C (900-1050°F) × 1-4 hours, air cool; single-stage treatment develops full strength . Hot Working: 1010-1177°C (1850-2150°F); reheat as necessary . Cold Working: Excellent formability in Condition A; can be cold drawn, rolled, and formed . Machining: Good machinability in Condition A; requires sharp tools and positive feeds; aged condition more difficult . Welding: Good weldability using GTAW and GMAW; post-weld aging recommended to restore properties .
