17-4PH is a chromium-nickel-copper precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steel offering an exceptional combination of high strength (up to 200 ksi tensile), good corrosion resistance, and simple heat treatment. Supplied in solution-treated Condition A, it can be strengthened through a single low-temperature aging treatment that minimizes distortion and scaling. With service capability up to 316-427°C (600-800°F), this alloy is widely used in aerospace, oil & gas, nuclear, and chemical processing industries for critical components requiring high strength and moderate corrosion resistance .

 2. Fabrication & Material Comparison

  • Heat Treatment:

    • Solution Treatment (Condition A): 1038°C (1900°F) × 30 min, rapid cool to below 16°C (60°F)

    • Aging (H900-H1150): 482-621°C (900-1150°F) × 1-4 hours, air cool

    • H1150M: 760°C (1400°F) × 2h + 620°C (1150°F) × 4h

  • Forming: Suitable for mild forming in solution-treated condition; high yield strength requires powerful equipment .

  • Machining: Good machinability in Condition A; produces long, gummy chips requiring sharp tools .

  • Welding: Good weldability using GTAW/TIG and GMAW/MIG; oxyacetylene not recommended; post-weld solution + aging required for optimal properties .

  • Hot Working: Forge at 1177°C (2150°F) starting temperature, finish at 1010°C (1850°F); post-work solution treatment required .

  • Cold Working: Can be cold worked with adequate power and lubrication .

  • Material Comparison:

    • vs. 15-5 PH: Similar properties; 15-5 offers better transverse toughness .

    • vs. 13-8 Mo: Lower strength but better cost-effectiveness; wider availability .

    • vs. 304 Stainless: Significantly higher strength; similar corrosion resistance .

    • vs. 410 Stainless: Superior corrosion resistance and strength; easier heat treatment .

3. Applications

  • Aerospace: Aircraft landing gear, engine mounts, fasteners, turbine blades, structural components

  • Oil & Gas: Valve stems, wellhead components, pump shafts, downhole tools, Christmas trees

  • Nuclear: Reactor internals, control rod mechanisms, fasteners

  • Chemical Processing: Shafts, fittings, gears, valve bodies
