15-5PH (XM-12) is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel offering an excellent combination of high strength (up to 200 ksi tensile), good corrosion resistance, and exceptional toughness through the thickness. With improved transverse toughness compared to 17-4 PH due to tighter composition control, this alloy maintains corrosion resistance similar to 304 stainless in most environments. It is widely specified for aircraft components, marine gas turbine parts, nuclear reactor hardware, and chemical processing equipment requiring high strength and environmental resistance .

2. Fabrication & Material Comparison
Heat Treatment: Solution anneal at 1038°C (1900°F) × 30 min, air cool; age harden at 482-621°C (900-1150°F) × 4 hours, air cool .
Forming: Mild forming in overaged condition; good workability .
Machining: Can be machined in any attainable condition; carbide tooling recommended .
Cold Working: Can be cold worked to improve yield strength .
Welding: Good weldability using shielded fusion or resistance methods; pre-weld cleaning essential .
Material Comparison:
vs. 17-4 PH: Superior transverse toughness; improved through-thickness properties; similar strength and corrosion resistance .
vs. 13-8 Mo: Lower strength but better cost-effectiveness; specified where 13-8 Mo properties not required .
vs. 304 Stainless: Significantly higher strength; comparable corrosion resistance .
vs. Custom 450: Similar properties; 15-5 offers better toughness in heavy sections .
Industrial: Paper mill equipment, gears, shafts, hollow shafts
General Engineering: High-strength fasteners, fittings, machinery components
