PH13-8Mo is a vacuum-melted (VIM+VAR/ESR) martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel offering an exceptional combination of high strength (up to 220 ksi tensile), excellent toughness, good corrosion resistance, and transverse property uniformity. With low carbon content and tight composition control, this alloy achieves superior toughness in all directions while maintaining corrosion resistance similar to 304 stainless in fully hardened conditions. It is the preferred material for aircraft landing gear, missile components, nuclear hardware, and high-strength fasteners requiring reliability in critical applications .

2. Fabrication & Material ComparisonHeat Treatment: Solution anneal at 927-954°C (1700-1750°F) followed by air cooling or faster; age hardening at temperatures from 482°C to 621°C (900-1150°F) depending on desired properties . Forming: Good formability in annealed condition; similar to other martensitic stainless steels . Machining: Best machined in solution-annealed condition; carbide tooling recommended . Welding: Good weldability with proper inert gas shielding; helium preferred. Pre-weld cleaning essential; post-weld aging required to restore properties . Material Comparison: vs. 15-5 PH: Higher toughness and strength; better transverse properties; similar corrosion resistance . vs. 17-4 PH: Superior toughness and strength; more expensive; specified for critical aerospace applications . vs. Custom 450: Higher strength capability; better toughness . vs. 304 Stainless: Comparable corrosion resistance with significantly higher strength .
