Alloy A-286 (UNS S66286) is an age-hardenable iron-nickel-chromium superalloy strengthened through titanium and aluminum additions. This material maintains high strength and oxidation resistance up to 700°C (1290°F), making it a cost-effective alternative to more highly alloyed materials for aerospace fasteners, turbine components, and high-temperature industrial applications.

2. Operating Conditions & Selection Criteria

A-286 is specified when austenitic stainless steels cannot provide sufficient high-temperature strength but the cost of nickel-base superalloys is not justified. Its precipitation-hardening characteristics enable properties tailored to specific service requirements.

  • Service Temperature Range: Optimized for continuous operation from cryogenic temperatures up to 700°C (1300°F). Short-term excursions to 815°C (1500°F) possible with reduced life expectancy .

  • High-Temperature Strength: Maintains useful strength through 700°C; 100-hour rupture strength at 650°C is approximately 345 MPa (50 ksi) .

  • Oxidation Resistance: Chromium content provides good resistance to scaling in air and combustion atmospheres up to 815°C (1500°F) .

  • Corrosion Performance: Suitable for mildly corrosive environments; not intended for severe aqueous corrosion or reducing acid service .

  • Magnetic Properties: Non-magnetic at all temperatures down to cryogenic conditions; suitable for instrumentation and non-magnetic equipment .


3. Fabrication & Material Comparison

A-286 offers good fabricability with proper heat treatment sequencing, making it suitable for complex formed components and precision fasteners.

  • Machining: Best performed in solution-treated condition before aging. Machinability rating approximately 50% of B1112 steel. Carbide tooling recommended with positive rake angles. Work-hardening rate moderate; rigid setups required for precision tolerances .

  • Welding: Good weldability using GTAW, GMAW, and limited SMAW. Matching filler metals (AMS 5805) recommended for high-strength applications. Preheating generally not required; post-weld aging restores properties .

  • Forming & Heat Treatment :

    • Solution Annealing: 900-980°C (1650-1800°F), hold time dependent on section size, oil or water quench

    • Aging Treatment: 700-730°C (1300-1350°F) × 16 hours, air cool

    • Hot Working Range: 925-1120°C (1700-2050°F)

    • Cold Working: Good formability in solution-treated condition; intermediate anneals may be required for severe deformation

  • Material Comparison:

    • vs. 316 Stainless: Significantly higher strength above 500°C through precipitation hardening; preferred for elevated-temperature fasteners .

    • vs. Inconel 718: Lower cost alternative where maximum service temperature below 650°C; 718 required for higher stresses or temperatures above 700°C .

    • vs. Waspaloy: More cost-effective where strength requirements moderate; Waspaloy offers superior performance above 650°C .

    • ASTM A453 Grade 660: Standard specification covering A-286 for high-temperature bolting; Class A (121 ksi min) and Class B (130 ksi min) variants available .
