Operating Conditions & Selection CriteriaA-286 is specified when austenitic stainless steels cannot provide sufficient high-temperature strength but the cost of nickel-base superalloys is not justified. Its precipitation-hardening characteristics enable properties tailored to specific service requirements. Service Temperature Range: Optimized for continuous operation from cryogenic temperatures up to 700°C (1300°F). Short-term excursions to 815°C (1500°F) possible with reduced life expectancy . High-Temperature Strength: Maintains useful strength through 700°C; 100-hour rupture strength at 650°C is approximately 345 MPa (50 ksi) . Oxidation Resistance: Chromium content provides good resistance to scaling in air and combustion atmospheres up to 815°C (1500°F) . Corrosion Performance: Suitable for mildly corrosive environments; not intended for severe aqueous corrosion or reducing acid service .
