Alloy 242 (UNS N10242) is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy strengthened through a unique long-range ordering (LRO) mechanism rather than conventional precipitation hardening . Upon aging, it forms Ni₂(Mo,Cr) domains that deliver tensile and creep strength up to 1300°F (705°C) approximately double that of solid-solution strengthened alloys, while maintaining excellent ductility and low thermal expansion characteristics .

Fabrication & Material ComparisonAlloy 242 (UNS N10242) offers good fabricability in the annealed condition, distinguishing it from many high-strength superalloys that sacrifice workability for performance. Heat Treatment : Solution Annealing: 1038-1121°C (1900-2050°F), air cool; water quench recommended for heavy sections Aging: 650°C (1200°F) × 24-48 hours, air cool
Welding: Excellent weldability using GTAW and GMAW processes with matching composition filler metal (ERNiMo-12). High heat input methods not recommended. Pre-weld cleaning essential; post-weld aging required to restore properties . Forming: Good hot and cold formability in annealed condition; intermediate anneals may be required for severe deformation . Machining: Machinability similar to other high-strength nickel alloys; carbide tooling recommended with positive rake angles . Material Comparison : vs. Solid-Solution Alloys (Hastelloy X, 625): Twice the tensile and creep strength up to 705°C; significantly lower thermal expansion vs. Haynes 230: Lower maximum use temperature but higher strength in intermediate range; better fluorine resistance vs. Haynes 244: 244 represents next-generation upgrade with 55-110°C higher use temperature and lower CTE vs. Low-Expansion Alloys (909): Better oxidation resistance without need for coatings; higher strength above 540°C
