In the specialized field of high-temperature industrial applications where materials face extreme thermal and chemical challenges, selecting the right alloy becomes critical to operational success. As an ISO 9001 and AS9120 certified manufacturer and supplier based in China, ZYTC Alloy delivers precision-engineered, high-performance nickel alloy solutions. Our Hastelloy® N (UNS N10003) represents a specialized nickel-based alloy specifically formulated to excel in high-temperature environments, particularly those involving fluoride salts and oxidizing atmospheres.

1. Product Specifications & Properties

Alloy N is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy developed to provide excellent corrosion resistance in hot fluoride salt environments while maintaining good high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance. The controlled chemistry prevents embrittlement during prolonged thermal exposure.

2. Operating Conditions & Selection Guidelines

  • Ideal Media: Specifically engineered for molten fluoride salt environments (FLiBe, FLiNaK) at elevated temperatures. Excellent resistance to oxidation in air up to 982°C (1800°F) continuous service, with intermittent use possible up to 1038°C (1900°F)

  • Critical Advantage: Maintains alloying elements in solid solution between 593-871°C (1100-1600°F) without embrittlement after prolonged exposure at 816°C (1500°F). Minimal measurable oxidation up to 649°C (1200°F). Resists grain-boundary attack from fluoride salts

  • Temperature Range: Designed for service from 704-871°C (1300-1600°F) in fluoride salt environments. Good oxidation resistance in air up to 982°C (1800°F)

  • Common Applications: Molten salt reactor components, fluoride salt handling systems, high-temperature chemical processing equipment, nuclear fuel reprocessing, specialized aerospace components, and research facilities requiring high-temperature fluoride resistance

3. Fabrication & Material Comparison

  • Heat Treatment: Does not respond to conventional precipitation hardening. Annealed at 1177°C (2150°F) followed by cooling. Intermediate annealing may be required during cold forming sequences

  • Welding Considerations: Excellent weldability using GTAW/TIG, GMAW, and SMAW methods. Submerged arc welding not recommended. Maintains corrosion resistance in welded areas when proper procedures followed

  • Forming: Responsive to both hot and cold forming operations. Optimal hot working range 871-1177°C (1600-2150°F). Good cold workability with appropriate allowances for work hardening

  • Machining: Good machinability using conventional methods with appropriate coolants and lubricants. Standard tooling suitable with proper speeds and feeds

  • Versus 316L Stainless: Superior high-temperature strength and fluoride salt resistance. Unaffected by embrittlement in neutron irradiation environments where stainless steels may degrade

  • Versus Inconel 600: Better resistance to fluoride salts and improved thermal stability. Maintains properties without aging embrittlement after extended high-temperature exposure

  • Versus Hastelloy® X: Superior performance specifically in fluoride environments; X better suited for general high-temperature oxidizing service

  • Product Forms: Available as sheets, plates, pipes, tubes, bars, rods, strips, wires, forgings, and custom fabrications
