III. Service Conditions & Selection Boundaries

Suitable Applications:

  • Aerospace: Turbine blades, rings, rocket engine parts
  • Nuclear: Core springs, fasteners (PWR/BWR)
  • Industrial: High-temp springs, bolts, pressure vessels

Selection Boundaries:

  • Need higher strength? → Choose Inconel 718
  • Need corrosion resistance? → Choose Inconel 625
  • Need oxidation >700°C? → Choose Inconel 601
  • Cost-sensitive? → Choose A-286

Fabrication Guidelines:

  • Welding: Challenging (strain-age cracking risk). Use annealed material + matching filler. Post-weld solution + age required.
  • Hot Work: 1040-1205°C. Avoid below 980°C.
  • Machining: Very difficult. Rough machine annealed, finish after aging (0.07% shrinkage).
