ZYTC Inconel® 725 (UNS N07725) Age-Hardenable Nickel Alloy

When oil & gas downhole tools and sour gas applications demand ultra-high strength (double that of annealed 625) combined with superior corrosion resistance, material selection is critical. As an ISO 9001 and AS9120 certified supplier, ZYTC Alloy presents this technical guide for Inconel 725.

I. Product Information

  • Material Name: Inconel® 725 Age-Hardenable Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum Alloy (UNS N07725)

  • Definition: An advanced nickel-based superalloy strengthened through precise heat treatment, achieving yield strength approximately double that of annealed Alloy 625. Enables uniform strength in large/complex sections where cold working is ineffective.

  • Core Value: Ultra-high strength + superior corrosion resistance for sour gas service and aggressive environments.

  • Certification: ISO 9001 & AS9120

  • Product Forms: Bar | Round Bar | Flat Bar | Forging Stock | Custom Components

Chemical Composition (wt%):

ElementNiCrMoNbTiFe
Min55.019.07.02.751.0*
Max59.022.59.54.01.79.0*

Fe 9% max. Al 0.35% max, Mn 0.35% max, Si 0.20% max, C 0.030% max, P 0.015% max, S 0.010% max.

II. Service Conditions & Selection Boundaries

Suitable Conditions (Why choose it?)

  1. Sour Gas Service (H₂S): Excellent resistance to sulfide stress cracking per NACE MR0175.

  2. Downhole Tools: High-strength components in deep, high-pressure wells.

  3. Marine Environments: Subsea components requiring strength + corrosion resistance.

  4. Complex Sections: Where cold working cannot achieve uniform strength.

Typical Applications:

  • Oil & Gas Downhole: Hangers, landing nipples, side pocket mandrels, polished bore receptacles

  • Sour Service: Critical components in H₂S environments

  • Marine: High-strength fasteners, subsea hardware

  • Industrial: Polymer extrusion dies

Material Selection Boundaries:

  • Need higher temperature >500°C? → Consider Inconel 718 or 725 (check limits)

  • Need maximum corrosion resistance? → Consider Inconel 625 or 686

  • Need weldability without post-heat treat? → Consider Inconel 625

  • Cost-sensitive applications? → Consider 17-4 PH or 316 SS (if conditions permit)

III. Manufacturing Process & Material Comparison

Critical Heat Treatment:

StageTemperatureCoolingPurpose
Solution1040°C (1900°F)Air coolDissolves elements; soft/workable condition
Age Hardening730°C (1350°F)/8h → furnace cool 56°C/h → 620°C (1150°F)/8hAir coolPrecipitates strengthening phases for double strength

Fabrication Guidelines:

  • Hot Working: 900-1120°C (1650-2050°F). Final reductions: 20% min (open-die), 10% min (closed-die) to avoid duplex grain structure.

  • Machining (Group D-2 - Very Difficult):

    • Rough machine in solution-annealed (softer) condition

    • Finish machine after aging (harder condition)

    • Allow 0.07% shrinkage during aging for final dimensions

Mechanical Properties (Annealed):

PropertyValue
Tensile Strength855 MPa (124 ksi)
Yield Strength427 MPa (62 ksi)
Elongation57%
Hardness5 HRC

Aged condition achieves approximately double the yield strength of annealed condition.
