Alloy 282 (UNS N07208)  is a wrought, age-hardenable nickel-based superalloy developed to provide an optimal balance of creep strength, thermal stability, and fabricability . Engineered for aerospace and industrial gas turbine applications, it achieves creep strength surpassing Waspaloy and approaching R-41 while maintaining excellent resistance to strain-age cracking—a common limitation of high-strength superalloys .

2. Operating Conditions & Selection Boundaries

This alloy was specifically developed for high-temperature structural applications, particularly in gas turbine engines, where it must withstand significant mechanical loads and aggressive environments .

  • Temperature Range: Designed for continuous service up to 1700°F (927°C). Excels in the 1200-1700°F range, with creep strength surpassing Waspaloy and approaching R-41 .

  • Creep Strength: Exceptional creep resistance across its service range. For example, at 1500°F (816°C), the stress to produce 1% creep in 100 hours is 32 ksi (221 MPa)—equivalent to R-41 and significantly higher than Waspaloy (25 ksi) .

  • Fabricability: Unlike many high-creep-strength alloys, Haynes 282 exhibits outstanding resistance to strain-age cracking. The slower precipitation kinetics of the gamma-prime phase allow for stress relief during welding without cracking .

  • Heat Treatment: Supplied in solution-annealed condition (2050-2100°F / 1121-1149°C) for optimal formability. After fabrication, a standard two-step age hardening treatment (1850°F/2h/AC + 1450°F/8h/AC) develops full strength .

  • Critical Constraint: For Advanced Ultra-Supercritical (A-USC) boiler applications requiring 100,000+ hours creep life at 1400°F (760°C)/14.5 ksi (100 MPa), a different single-step heat treatment (1475°F/8h/AC) per ASME Code Case 3024 is required .

Applications

  • Aerospace & Industrial Gas Turbines: Combustor cans, transition ducts, turbine exhaust components, nozzle assemblies, hot-gas-path hardware, engine cases, rings .

  • Power Generation: Advanced Ultra-Supercritical (A-USC) boiler and steam turbine components, supercritical CO₂ power cycle equipment, concentrating solar power plants requiring 100,000+ hours creep life at 760°C/100 MPa .

  • Automotive: Turbocharger seals and high-temperature springs .
