Alloy 90 (UNS N07090 / 2.4632) is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-chromium-cobalt superalloy strengthened by titanium and aluminum additions. The cobalt content (15-21%) provides enhanced creep resistance and stress-rupture strength compared to cobalt-free grades, making it suitable for highly stressed components operating continuously up to 920°C (1688°F). It is the established material for gas turbine blades, discs, and high-temperature springs requiring long-term reliability under sustained loading .

2.Fabrication & Material Comparison

Nimonic® 90 requires precise thermal processing to develop the gamma-prime precipitate structure responsible for its high-temperature strength.

  • Heat Treatment :

    • Bar Products (BS HR2): Solution treat 1080°C (1975°F) × 8 hours, air cool or quench; age 700°C (1290°F) × 16 hours, air cool .

    • Sheet Products (BS HR202): Solution treat 1100-1150°C × 1-10 minutes, rapid quench; age 750°C (1380°F) × 4 hours, air cool (stabilization at 925°C optional per specification) .

    • Wire (Spring Temper + Aged): Age at 650°C (1200°F) × 4 hours or 600°C (1110°F) × 16 hours depending on service temperature requirements .

  • Welding: Weldable using GTAW (TIG) and GMAW (MIG) processes. Matching filler metal (Nimonic 90 welding wire) required. Pre-weld cleaning essential; post-weld heat treatment necessary to restore aged properties. Precise techniques required to avoid cracking due to high Cr and Co content .

  • Forming & Hot Working:

    • Forging Range: 983-1177°C (1800-2150°F)

    • Hot Working Range: 1050-1200°C (1922-2192°F)

    • Cold Working: Standard tooling applicable; soft die materials and heavy lubricants reduce galling

  • Machining: Requires powerful equipment, rigid setups, and positive feeds due to high strength. Carbide tooling recommended. Water-based coolants for high-speed operations (turning, milling); heavy lubricants for drilling, tapping, broaching .

Applications

  • Gas Turbine Engines: Turbine blades, discs, rings, combustion components, exhaust reheat assemblies

  • Aerospace: High-temperature fasteners, springs, engine mounts, hot section hardware

  • Power Generation: Steam turbine components, nuclear reactor hardware

  • Automotive: High-performance exhaust valves, turbocharger components

  • Industrial: Hot-work tooling (dies, fixtures), high-temperature springs, extrusion tooling

  • Oil & Gas: High-temperature valves and components for sour service (NACE MR0175 approved)
