Alloy 80A (UNS N07080 / 2.4952) is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-chromium superalloy developed as an enhanced evolution of Nimonic® 75. Strategic additions of aluminum (1-1.8%) and titanium (1.8-2.7%) enable the formation of gamma-prime precipitates during aging, delivering exceptional tensile strength, creep resistance, and oxidation resistance up to 815°C (1500°F) . It is the standard material for gas turbine blades, exhaust valves, and nuclear steam generator components requiring long-term reliability under sustained stress .

2. Fabrication & Material Comparison

Nimonic® 80A offers good fabricability in the solution-annealed condition, though its high strength requires appropriate equipment and techniques for forming and machining.

  • Heat Treatment :

    • Solution Annealing: 1079°C (1975°F) × 8 hours, air cool

    • Aging: 700-750°C (1292-1382°F) × 16 hours, air cool (typical)

    • Alternative Aging: 650°C × 24 hours + 750°C × 16 hours for specific property optimization

  • Welding: Weldable using GTAW (TIG), SMAW (MMA), and resistance welding. Matching filler metal (Nimonic 80A welding wire) required. Post-weld heat treatment (solution anneal + age) necessary to restore parent metal properties. Material must be in annealed condition prior to welding .

  • Forming: Good ductility in annealed condition permits complex forming; hot forming preferred for severe deformation. Forging range: 982-1177°C (1800-2150°F) .

  • Machining: Machinability similar to other age-hardenable nickel alloys; carbide tooling recommended with positive rake angles. Water-based coolants for high-speed operations; heavy lubricants for tapping and drilling. Work-hardening rate moderate; rigid setups essential .

Applications

  • Gas Turbine Engines: Turbine blades, rotor discs, sealing rings, combustion components, nozzle guide vanes

  • Nuclear Steam Generators: Tube supports, spacer grids, structural hardware

  • Internal Combustion Engines: High-performance exhaust valves, valve seat inserts, turbocharger components

  • Die-Casting: Inserts, cores, and tooling for aluminum and magnesium die-casting

  • Automotive: High-temperature fasteners, springs, and exhaust system components

  • Industrial: Heat treating fixtures, furnace components, hot-work tooling
