Alloy R41 (UNS N07041 / 2.4973) is an age-hardenable nickel-chromium superalloy strengthened by cobalt, molybdenum, titanium, and aluminum additions. Designed for severely stressed applications up to 980°C (1800°F), it delivers exceptional tensile and creep strength in jet engine hot sections, rocket hardware, and high-temperature fasteners. The alloy requires careful thermal processing due to susceptibility to strain-age cracking during welding .
1. Product Specifications & Physical Data
ZYTC Alloy supplies UNS N07041 in mill forms for aerospace and power generation applications requiring verified high-temperature properties and complete material traceability.
Available Forms: Bar, rod, forging stock, sheet, strip, plate, wire, and welding wire.
Rene 41 requires precise thermal processing to develop gamma-prime precipitate structure while avoiding strain-age cracking.
Heat Treatment Options :
Option 1 (Higher Ductility/Creep): Solution 1177°C (2150°F) × 4 hours, air cool; age 899°C (1650°F) × 4 hours, air cool.
Option 2 (Higher Tensile): Solution 1079°C (1975°F) × 4 hours, air cool; age 760°C (1400°F) × 16 hours, air cool .
Spring Temper: 1065°C (1950°F) × 4 hours solution + age as above .
Hot Working: Forge in range 1065-1175°C (1950-2150°F); avoid low-temperature working.
Cold Working: Limited formability in annealed condition; intermediate anneals required for severe deformation.
Machining: Requires heavy-duty equipment, rigid setups, and sharp tools. Carbide tooling recommended with positive rake angles. Water-based coolants for high-speed operations.
Welding: Susceptible to strain-age cracking. Weld only in fully solution-treated condition using GTAW (DC straight polarity) with copper backup bars or water-cooled fixtures for rapid cooling. Resistance and electron beam welding preferred. Post-weld solution treatment with rapid heating/cooling through 650-870°C range required before aging .
Fasteners & Springs: High-temperature bolts, nuts, fasteners retaining tension up to 980°C
Structural Components: Torque rings, shafts, casings, space shuttle components
