Nimonic® PE16 (UNS N07016) is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-iron-chromium superalloy with molybdenum additions for solid-solution strengthening. Designed for service up to 750°C (1380°F), it offers an exceptional combination of high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance, and fabricability—including excellent hot and cold working characteristics and weldability. Its controlled low cobalt content makes it particularly suitable for nuclear reactor components where induced radioactivity must be minimized .

2. Fabrication & Material ComparisonAlloy PE16 is specifically formulated for excellent fabricability, distinguishing it from many superalloys that sacrifice workability for strength. Heat Treatment : Solution Anneal: 1038°C (1900°F) × 4 hours, air cool Intermediate: 799°C (1470°F) × 2 hours, air cool Final Age: 699°C (1290°F) × 16 hours, air cool
Hot Working: 1177-954°C (2150-1750°F); forging at 1177-954°C (2150-1750°F) . Cold Working: Excellent cold formability; standard tooling applicable with heavy-duty lubricants. Soft die materials recommended to minimize galling. All lubricant residues must be thoroughly cleaned after forming . Machining: Work-hardens during cutting; requires heavy-duty equipment, rigid setups, and sharp tools. Water-based coolants for high-speed operations; heavy lubricants for drilling and tapping . Welding: Excellent weldability using GTAW, GMAW, and resistance welding. Matching filler metal recommended. Surface must be clean and free from oil, paint, or crayon stains before welding .
ApplicationsNuclear Engineering: Reactor core components, fuel element end fittings, structural parts requiring low cobalt content to minimize induced radioactivity Gas Turbine Engines: Compressor casings, combustion chambers, turbine rings, fasteners Aerospace: High-temperature airframe components, engine mounts, fasteners Industrial Furnaces: Heat treatment fixtures, radiant tubes, structural supports Power Generation: Steam turbine components, high-temperature bolting
