Waspaloy (UNS N07001 / 2.4654) is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-based superalloy strengthened by controlled additions of cobalt, molybdenum, titanium, and aluminum. Designed for critical rotating components in gas turbine engines, it delivers exceptional tensile and creep strength up to 650°C (1200°F), combined with excellent oxidation resistance. Its balanced composition ensures microstructural stability during prolonged thermal exposure, making it the preferred material for turbine discs, shafts, and blades .

2. Fabrication & Material Comparison

Waspaloy requires precise multistage thermal processing to develop the optimized gamma-prime precipitate distribution responsible for its balanced properties.

  • Heat Treatment :

    • Solution Anneal: 1010-1065°C (1850-1950°F) × 2-4 hours, air cool or oil quench

    • Stabilization (First Age): 843°C (1550°F) × 4 hours, air cool

    • Precipitation (Second Age): 760°C (1400°F) × 16 hours, air cool

  • Hot Working: 954-1177°C (1750-2150°F); forging within this range with controlled strain rates .

  • Cold Working: Good formability in annealed condition; work-hardening rate moderate .

  • Machining: Requires rigid setups and sharp tools; carbide tooling recommended; water-based coolants for high-speed operations .

  • Welding: Good weldability using GTAW (TIG) with matching filler metal (AMS 5828). Pre-weld cleaning essential; post-weld full heat treatment required to restore properties. Not recommended for welding in aged condition .

  • Material Comparison:

    • vs. Rene 41: Lower peak strength but better thermal stability and fabricability; preferred for rotating components requiring long-term reliability .

    • vs. Inconel 718: Superior high-temperature strength above 650°C; 718 limited to 650°C maximum .

    • vs. Nimonic 115: Comparable performance; Waspaloy has extensive service history in US and European engines .

    • vs. Udimet 500: Similar applications; Waspaloy offers better balance of properties for disc applications .

    • vs. Haynes 282: Both represent advanced wrought superalloys; 282 developed later with improved fabricability .
