1. Product Specifications & Properties

Alloy C-4 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with controlled carbon and silicon content. It is designed to minimize grain-boundary precipitation during high-temperature exposure, maintaining ductility and corrosion resistance after extended service in the 650-1040°C range.

2. Operating Conditions & Selection Guidelines

  • Ideal Media: Resists both oxidizing acids (due to chromium content) and reducing acids (due to molybdenum content). Suitable for contaminated mineral acids, organic acids, flue gas desulfurization environments, and seawater applications

  • Temperature Range: Maintains structural integrity up to 1040°C in oxidizing atmospheres. Designed specifically for applications involving prolonged exposure to the 650-1040°C range where thermal stability is critical

  • Critical Advantage: Unlike C-276, C-4 resists formation of intermetallic phases during thermal aging, preventing loss of ductility and corrosion resistance in welded or heat-exposed components

  • Common Applications: Chemical reactors, heat exchangers, pickling equipment, nuclear fuel reprocessing components, incinerator parts, and pollution control systems

3. Fabrication & Material Comparison

  • Welding Characteristics: Resists sensitization in the heat-affected zone, allowing as-welded service without post-weld heat treatment for most applications. Suitable for GTAW/TIG, GMAW, and plasma arc welding methods. Submerged arc and oxy-acetylene welding not recommended

  • Heat Treatment: Standard annealing at 1066°C followed by rapid quenching. Good formability using conventional methods

  • Versus C-276: C-4 offers improved thermal stability and maintains higher ductility after aging, making it preferable for equipment operating in the 650-1040°C range. C-276 remains suitable for lower-temperature applications and offers broader corrosion resistance in some mixed-acid environments

  • Product Forms: Available as sheet, plate, bar, seamless and welded pipe, and wire
