Alloy 233 is a next-generation nickel-cobalt-chromium-molybdenum-aluminum superalloy that bridges the performance gap between high-creep-strength alloys and ultra-high-oxidation-resistant alloys. By forming a protective alumina (Al₂O₃) scale rather than chromia, it achieves oxidation resistance comparable to Haynes 214 while maintaining creep strength approaching Haynes 230 up to 1149°C (2100°F). Additionally, it can be age-hardened for enhanced strength at intermediate temperatures

2. Operating Conditions & Selection Boundaries

This alloy was specifically developed to combine the oxidation resistance of Haynes® 214 with the creep strength of Haynes® 230, addressing a long-standing performance gap in high-temperature materials .

  • Oxidation Resistance: Designed for sustained use up to 2100°F (1149°C). Forms a stable, adherent Al₂O₃ scale that remains protective in high-velocity combustion atmospheres. Static oxidation testing at 2100°F for 1008 hours shows metal loss of only 0.2 mils/side, comparable to Haynes® 214 and significantly better than Haynes® 230 or alloy 617 .

  • Dual Heat Treatment Capability:

    • Solution Annealed (2125-2150°F / 1163-1177°C): Recommended for service above the gamma-prime solvus (1767°F / 964°C) .

    • Age Hardened (1650°F/4h/AC + 1450°F/8h/AC): Provides significant strength increase for low-to-intermediate temperature applications below the solvus .

  • Fabricability: Can be formed and welded using conventional methods. Exhibits good hot workability, cold formability, and weldability—unusual for an alumina-forming alloy .

  • Critical Constraint: Service in the solution-annealed condition at temperatures below 1767°F will result in gamma-prime precipitation, which must be accounted for in design .
