Product Specifications & Properties

Alloy G is a nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum alloy with additions of copper and niobium. The controlled chemistry provides resistance to a wide range of corrosives while maintaining good fabricability. Niobium addition helps stabilize the alloy against sensitization during welding.

Operating Conditions & Selection Guidelines

  • Ideal Media: Resists sulfuric and phosphoric acids in various concentrations. Suitable for flue gas desulfurization environments, mixed acid streams, and applications requiring resistance to both oxidizing and reducing conditions. Copper addition enhances resistance to sulfuric acid

  • Critical Advantage: Niobium stabilization prevents intergranular corrosion in welded areas. Good resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting

  • Temperature Range: Annealed at 1177°C (2150°F) with rapid quench. Forging performed at 927-1149°C (1700-2100°F). Service temperatures vary by environment

  • Common Applications: Wet flue gas desulfurization scrubbers, sulfuric and phosphoric acid processing equipment, chemical reactors, heat exchangers, waste treatment systems, and components exposed to aggressive industrial byproducts

Fabrication & Material Comparison

  • Forming Characteristics: Suitable for both hot and cold forming operations using conventional methods. Good ductility allows for complex shapes

  • Welding Considerations: Weldable by GTAW/TIG, SMAW, and submerged arc methods. Niobium stabilization reduces risk of sensitization in heat-affected zones. Good intergranular corrosion resistance in as-welded condition

  • Heat Treatment: Annealing at 1177°C (2150°F) followed by rapid air or water quench to restore corrosion resistance after hot working

  • Machining: Good machinability using conventional techniques with water-based coolants. Standard tooling suitable with proper speeds and feeds

  • Versus C-276: Lower molybdenum content makes G more cost-effective for sulfuric and phosphoric acid service where C-276's higher molybdenum is not required. Better suited for mixed acid streams containing fluorides

  • Versus 317L Stainless: Significantly superior resistance to hot sulfuric and phosphoric acids. Specified where stainless steels show rapid corrosion in aggressive acid environments

  • Versus G-30: G is the predecessor to G-30. G-30 offers enhanced corrosion resistance in certain phosphoric acid environments due to higher chromium
