2. Operating Conditions & Selection Guidelines
Ideal Media: Excellent resistance to oxidizing, reducing, and neutral atmospheres up to 1177°C (2150°F). Good resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in petrochemical environments. Suitable for applications involving combustion products and flue gases
Critical Advantage: Maintains strength and ductility after extreme long-term thermal exposure. Tested to 8,700 hours at 1177°C (2150°F) and 16,000 hours at 650-870°C (1200-1600°F) without embrittlement
Temperature Range: Continuous service up to 1177°C (2150°F) for many applications. Optimal performance in the 650-870°C (1200-1600°F) range
Common Applications: Aerospace combustion cans, transition ducts, flame holders, afterburners; industrial furnace rolls, radiant tubes; chemical processing retorts, catalyst supports, pyrolysis tubing, flash dryer parts
3. Fabrication & Material Comparison
Heat Treatment: Supplied in solution-annealed condition. Standard annealing at 1177°C (2150°F) followed by rapid cooling. Hydrogen atmosphere used for bright-annealed finishes. Lower annealing temperatures may precipitate secondary phases
Hot Working: Forge and hot form after uniform heating to 1177°C (2150°F). Good workability in appropriate temperature ranges
Cold Working: Exhibits good ductility for cold-forming operations. Intermediate annealing may be required for severe deformation
Welding Compatibility: Excellent weldability using GTAW/TIG, GMAW/MIG, SMAW/stick, and resistance welding methods. Welded components should be annealed and rapidly cooled to restore properties
Versus 316L Stainless: Significantly higher high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance. Maintains properties where 316L would rapidly oxidize or lose strength
Versus Inconel 625: Similar high-temperature capabilities. X offers better oxidation resistance at extreme temperatures; 625 provides higher strength at intermediate temperatures
Versus Hastelloy X Other Grades: The industry standard for high-temperature furnace and gas turbine components with proven long-term performance
