Alloy K-500 (UNS N05500 / 2.4375) is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-copper alloy that combines the excellent corrosion resistance of Monel® 400 with significantly higher strength. Through age hardening, it achieves approximately three times the yield strength and double the tensile strength of Monel® 400, making it suitable for demanding applications in marine, chemical, and oil & gas environments.

2. Operating Conditions & Selection Criteria
Alloy K-500 (UNS N05500 / 2.4375) is selected when high strength and corrosion resistance are required in combination.
Temperature Range: Maintains strength up to 650°C (1200°F). Remains ductile and tough down to -240°C (-400°F). Suitable for cryogenic and elevated temperature service.
Corrosion Resistance: Comparable to Monel 400 in most media. Excellent resistance to seawater, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, and alkalis.
Stress Corrosion Cracking Note: In the age-hardened condition, K500 has a greater tendency toward stress-corrosion cracking in some environments compared to Monel 400. This should be considered for highly stressed components in specific chemical media.
Magnetic Properties: Non-magnetic down to -129°C (-200°F). A magnetic layer may develop during thermal processing due to selective oxidation; this can be removed by pickling or bright dipping in acid to restore non-magnetic properties.
Spark Resistance: Spark-resistant characteristic suitable for hazardous environments.
3. Fabrication Guidelines & Material Comparison
Alloy K-500 requires specific processing to achieve its high-strength condition.
Fabrication Guidelines:
Heat Treatment: Responds to precipitation hardening. Age hardening treatment typically performed at 480-590°C (900-1100°F) following solution annealing.
Cold Working: Can be cold worked prior to precipitation hardening for additional strength increases.
Machining: Best performed in the annealed condition. Age-hardened material requires carbide tooling and reduced speeds.
Welding: Weldable using standard techniques. Post-weld heat treatment may be required to restore properties in the weld zone.
Hot Working: Suitable for hot working and forging within recommended temperature ranges.
Material Comparison:
vs. Monel® 400: Monel® 400 (annealed) offers 517-620 MPa tensile strength. K500 (aged) offers 896-1310 MPa tensile strength—approximately double. Alloy K-500 is selected when Monel 400's corrosion resistance is needed but higher strength is required for shafts, fasteners, and tools.
vs. 17-4 PH Stainless: K500 offers superior seawater corrosion resistance and remains non-magnetic, while 17-4 PH may corrode in marine environments and is magnetic.
vs. Inconel® 625: Alloy K-500 provides a cost-effective alternative where strength requirements are moderate and nickel-copper corrosion resistance is sufficient.
