Alloy R-405 (UNS N04405) is a nickel-copper alloy specifically formulated for superior machinability while retaining the high strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance characteristic of Monel alloys. The controlled sulfur addition creates chip-breaking characteristics ideal for automatic screw machines and high-volume precision components.

2. Operating Conditions & Selection Criteria

Monel® R-405 is selected when corrosion resistance must be combined with high-volume machinability.

  • Corrosion Resistance: Equivalent to Monel® 400 in most media. Resists seawater, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, and alkalis. Suitable for marine, chemical, and valve applications.

  • Primary Function: Designed for high-speed automatic screw machine operations. Not intended for structural or load-bearing components in as-machined condition.

  • Temperature Range: Maintains properties across a wide range but avoid high-temperature service due to sulfur content limitations.

3. Fabrication Guidelines & Material Comparison

Monel® R-405 requires specific processing considerations due to its sulfur-modified composition.

Fabrication Guidelines:

  • Machining: Excellent machinability. Ideal for high-speed automatic screw machines, Swiss-type lathes, and multi-spindle operations. The controlled sulfur content produces short, broken chips for improved tool life and production rates.

  • Cold Working: Can be cold worked using standard methods.

  • Hot Working & Forging: Not recommended. Sulfur content causes hot shortness, leading to cracking and brittleness at elevated temperatures.

  • Welding: Generally not recommended. Risk of weld cracking due to sulfur segregation. Components should be machined from solid bar rather than fabricated.

  • Heat Treatment: Does not respond to precipitation hardening. Hardness increases only through cold working.

  • Annealing: Perform at 927°C (1700°F) followed by air cooling to relieve stresses from cold working.

Material Comparison:

  • vs. Monel®   400: Monel®   400 offers similar corrosion resistance and mechanical properties but is more difficult to machine. R-405 is the preferred choice when production volumes justify the need for automated machining.

  • vs. Monel®  404/401: Those alloys are selected for electrical or magnetic properties. R-405 is selected strictly for machinability in corrosive service.

  • vs. Stainless Steels: Monel® R-405 provides superior resistance to seawater and reducing acids compared to standard austenitic stainless grades, with better machinability than Monel® 400.

Primary Applications:

  • Fasteners: nuts, bolts, screws for marine and chemical environments

  • Valve components: stems, shafts, fittings

  • Meter components: precision parts for flow measurement

  • High-volume screw machine products requiring Monel corrosion resistance
