2. Operating Conditions & Selection CriteriaMonel 404 is selected when standard nickel-copper alloys cannot meet magnetic or brazing requirements. Magnetic Properties: Maintains consistently low magnetic permeability, essential for relays, electronic capsules, and hermetic seals where magnetic interference must be minimized. Corrosion Resistance: Offers excellent resistance to seawater, chemical agents, and various corrosive media, supporting long-term reliability in marine and processing equipment. 3. Fabrication Guidelines & Material ComparisonMonel® 404 requires specific processing considerations due to its metallurgical characteristics. Fabrication Guidelines: Machining: Can be machined using conventional techniques standard for iron-based alloys. Welding: Good weldability using common welding methods. Cold Working: Performs well with standard tooling. Soft die materials are recommended for optimal surface finish. Hot Working: Cannot be hot worked. This is a critical limitation compared to other Monel alloys. Forging: Can be forged despite the inability to hot work. Annealing: Perform at 760°C (1400°F) for one hour to relieve stress and achieve optimal softness.
