Ferralium 255 is a copper-alloyed super duplex stainless steel containing 2% copper—significantly more than other super duplex grades—providing enhanced resistance to sulfuric, nitric, and phosphoric acids. With 25% chromium and a PRE exceeding 38, this alloy combines high mechanical strength (yield strength ≥ 570 MPa) with excellent abrasion and cavitation resistance. It is widely specified for marine hardware, chemical processing equipment, and oil & gas components requiring superior performance in aggressive acidic environments .

2. Fabrication & Material Comparison
Heat Treatment: Solution anneal 1100-1150°C (2012-2102°F), water quench .
Welding: Good weldability with controlled heat input; matching filler metals recommended .
Machining: Higher cutting forces than austenitic grades; requires rigid setups and adequate coolant .
Material Comparison:
vs. Super Duplex 2507 (S32750): Higher copper content provides superior acid resistance; comparable strength and pitting resistance .
vs. Duplex 2205: Higher alloy content provides better acid resistance and strength .
vs. 904L: Superior strength; comparable acid resistance at lower cost .
vs. Alloy 20: Higher strength; similar acid resistance with better chloride resistance .
FGD Systems: Flue gas desulfurization equipment, scrubbers
