Duplex 2205 is a nitrogen-alloyed duplex stainless steel combining austenitic and ferritic microstructures, offering approximately twice the yield strength of standard austenitic grades (316L/317L) with excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion. With a PRE of 35+, it provides superior performance in chloride-containing environments up to 300°C. This grade is widely specified for oil & gas piping, chemical processing vessels, pulp & paper equipment, and structural components requiring high strength and corrosion resistance .

2. Fabrication & Material Comparison

  • Heat Treatment: Solution anneal 1020-1100°C (1870-2012°F), water quench; rapid cooling essential to maintain phase balance .

  • Welding: Good weldability with controlled heat input; matching filler metals (2209) recommended to maintain duplex structure .

  • Forming: Higher strength requires more powerful equipment than austenitic grades; good cold formability .

  • Machining: Higher cutting forces than 316L; requires rigid setups, sharp tools, and adequate coolant .

  • Material Comparison:

    • vs. 316L: Twice the yield strength; superior SCC and pitting resistance; limited to 300°C max .

    • vs. 317L: Higher strength; comparable corrosion resistance with better SCC performance .

    • vs. 904L: Lower alloy cost; similar pitting resistance; different application profile .

    • vs. Super Duplex (2507): Lower strength and corrosion resistance; more cost-effective for moderate service .

3. Applications

  • Oil & Gas: Piping systems, flowlines, process vessels, heat exchangers

  • Chemical Processing: Reactors, columns, tanks, piping for aggressive media

  • Pulp & Paper: Digesters, bleach washers, chip pre-steaming vessels

  • Marine: Seawater handling systems, desalination equipment

  • Food Processing: Equipment requiring corrosion resistance and cleanability

  • Pressure Vessels: High-strength vessels for corrosive service

  • Structural Components: Bridges, offshore platforms, high-strength structures
