AMS5586J is the Aerospace Material Specification covering a corrosion- and heat-resistant nickel alloy in the form of welded and drawn tubing. This specification applies to Waspaloy tubing with a nominal outside diameter of 0.125 inch (3.18 mm) and above, and a nominal wall thickness of 0.015 inch (0.38 mm) and above.

The specification requires that the Waspaloy tubing be produced from consumable electrode remelted (CER) or vacuum induction melted (VIM) material, ensuring superior cleanliness, consistent chemistry, and enhanced mechanical properties critical for demanding aerospace applications.

 Operating Conditions & Selection Criteria

Waspaloy welded tubing is specified when designers require a high-strength, age-hardenable nickel superalloy for gas turbine applications requiring creep resistance and heat resistance up to 870°C (1600°F) in combustion atmospheres.

  • Service Temperature Range: Usable up to 870°C (1600°F) in combustion atmospheres; for critical rotating applications, maximum operating temperature should not exceed 650°C (1200°F)

  • Strengthening Mechanism: Age-hardened through precipitation of gamma-prime [Ni₃(Al,Ti)] during heat treatment; cobalt provides solid-solution strengthening

  • Creep Resistance: Excellent creep and stress-rupture properties at elevated temperatures

  • Oxidation Resistance: Good resistance to oxidation in gas turbine combustion atmospheres

  • Fabricability: Welded and drawn construction ensures tight dimensional tolerances and smooth surface finish

  • Weldability: Good weldability using GTAW (TIG); post-weld heat treatment required to restore properties

Applications

  • Gas Turbine Components in Aerospace Industry:

    • Compressor discs and rotors

    • Turbine discs and rotors

    • Shafts and spacers

    • Seals and rings

    • Casings and housings

    • High-temperature fasteners (bolts, studs, nuts)

    • Instrumentation tubing
