AMS 5766 specification covers corrosion- and heat-resistant nickel-base alloys (Incoloy 800, 800H, and 800HT) in the form of bars, forgings, and forging stock. The 800 series of alloys are nickel-iron-chromium superalloys that offer excellent high-temperature strength and resistance to oxidation, carburization, and other forms of high-temperature corrosion. These alloys are widely used in various applications—from furnace components and petrochemical furnace cracker tubes to sheathing for electrical heating elements.
Fabrication & Heat TreatmentSolution Annealing: Alloy 800: 982-1038°C (1800-1900°F), rapid quench Alloy 800H/800HT: 1149°C (2100°F) minimum, rapid quench . The higher temperature promotes grain growth (ASTM 5 or coarser) essential for creep strength .
Hot Working: Forge at 1093-1232°C (2000-2250°F); reheat as necessary Cold Working: Good formability; can be cold drawn and rolled Machining: Good machinability; similar to austenitic stainless steels; requires sharp tools and adequate lubrication Welding: Excellent weldability using GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), and SMAW; matching filler metal (ERNiCr-3 or ERNiFeCr-1) recommended
ApplicationsPetrochemical Industry: Furnace cracker tubes, ammonia reformer tubes, ethylene cracking furnace components, catalyst grid supports, heat exchangers, and process piping. Industrial Furnaces: Radiant tubes, retorts, muffles, heat-treating baskets and trays, furnace rolls, and thermocouple sheaths. Power Generation: Superheater and reheater tubing, boiler components, and nuclear power plant hardware. Oil & Gas: NACE MR0175 approved sour gas service components, wellhead equipment, and downhole tools. Electrical Heating: Sheathing for electrical heating elements.
