AMS5706N is the Aerospace Material Specification covering a corrosion- and heat-resistant nickel alloy in the form of bars, forgings, flash welded rings, and stock for forging and flash welded rings. This specification applies to Waspaloy produced from consumable electrode remelted or vacuum induction melted material, ensuring superior cleanliness, consistent chemistry, and enhanced mechanical properties critical for demanding aerospace applications.

The specification requires a solution heat treatment at temperatures ranging from 1825 to 1900°F (996 to 1038°C). This solution treatment dissolves precipitates and prepares the alloy's microstructure for subsequent aging, which end users typically perform to develop the full mechanical properties required for service.

Fabrication

Solution Treatment (As-Supplied): 996-1038°C (1825-1900°F), air cool or faster
Stabilization: 843°C (1550°F) × 4 hours, air cool
Aging: 760°C (1400°F) × 16 hours, air cool
Machining: Good machinability in solution treated condition (AMS 5706N); more difficult after aging
Welding: Good weldability using GTAW (TIG); post-weld heat treatment required to restore properties
Flash Welded Rings: Available for seamless, high-integrity ring components
