 Heat Treatment

Inconel 706 requires a specific three-stage heat treatment to achieve its optimal mechanical properties [7†L19-L20]:

StepTemperatureTimeCoolingPurpose
Solution Treatment1800°F (982°C)Rapid coolingDissolve precipitates; soften for forming
Stabilization1550°F (843°C)3 hoursAir coolForm η phase for creep ductility
Precipitation Hardening1325°F (718°C)8 hoursFurnace cool to 1150°F (621°C), hold 8 hours, air coolDevelop γ' and γ'' strengthening phases

Fabrication Guidelines:

  • Annealing: 1700–1850°F (925–1010°C) + rapid cooling

  • Forging: 1800–2100°F (980–1150°C) with controlled cooling

  • Hot Working: 1600–2100°F (872–1149°C)

  • Solution Treatment: 1800°F (982°C) per AMS 5701
