AMS 5666 specification covers a corrosion- and heat-resistant nickel alloy (Alloy 625 / UNS N06625) in the form of bars, forgings, extrusions, flash welded rings up to 10 inches (254 mm) in diameter, and stock of any size for forgings, extrusions, and rings.
 
Alloy 625, frequently called Inconel® 625, is a corrosion- and heat-resistant nickel-based alloy alloyed with chromium and iron, along with niobium-tantalum and molybdenum for increased toughness and strength. It is nonmagnetic, corrosion-resistant, and oxidation-resistant, with service temperatures ranging from cryogenic to 982°C (1800°F). Because of its alloy matrix, precipitation hardening treatments are not required .

Alloy 625 derives its high strength from the synergistic effect of molybdenum and niobium, which stiffen the nickel-chromium matrix without requiring precipitation hardening heat treatment. This alloy is generally double-melted, with either EF-AOD melt (Electric Furnace followed by Argon Oxygen Decarburization) or VIM (Vacuum Induction Melt), and with a second melt by either VAR (Vacuum Arc Remelt) or ESR (Electroslag Reduction).

Fabrication 

  • Annealing: 954-1038°C (1750-1900°F), water quench or rapid air cool; relieves cold work stresses .

  • Hot Working: 954-1205°C (1750-2200°F); reheat as necessary .

  • Cold Working: Good formability; can be cold drawn and forged .

  • Machining: Good machinability; requires sharp tools and adequate lubrication; work-hardening rate moderate .

  • Welding: Excellent weldability using GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), and resistance welding; matching filler metal (ERNiCrMo-3) recommended .
