AMS 5589 specification covers a corrosion- and heat-resistant nickel alloy in the form of seamless tubing 0.125 inch (3.18 mm) and over in nominal OD with nominal wall thickness 0.015 inch (0.38 mm) and over.

Alloy 718 (UNS N07718 / W. Nr. 2.4668) is an austenitic nickel-based superalloy. Alloy 718 exhibits excellent high yield tensile and creep-rupture properties at temperatures up to 1300°F (704°C) and oxidation resistance to 1800°F (982°C). Alloy 718 is used in applications that require high strength, such as parts for jet engines and high-speed airframe parts including wheels, buckets, spacers, and high-temperature bolts and fasteners.

Fabrication 

  • Solution Annealing: 954-982°C (1750-1800°F) × 1 hour, air cool or faster .

  • Precipitation Hardening: 718-732°C (1325-1350°F) × 8 hours, furnace cool to 621°C (1150°F) × 8-18 hours, air cool .

  • Cold Working: Moderate formability in solution annealed condition .

  • Welding: Good weldability using GTAW (TIG); post-weld aging required to restore properties .
