AMS 4675 specification covers a corrosion-resistant nickel-copper alloy (Alloy 400 / UNS N04400) in the form of bars, forgings, and forging stock. Alloy 400 is a popular nickel-copper alloy that is hardened via cold working, exhibiting high strength, excellent resistance to a variety of acidic and alkaline environments, and good ductility and thermal conductivity. Suitable for temperatures ranging from subzero to 538°C (1,000°F), Alloy 400 is widely used in marine engineering, chemical processing, hydrocarbon processing equipment, and heat exchangers .

2. Fabrication & Material Comparison

  • Annealing: 843-871°C (1550-1600°F) × 10-30 minutes, water quench or air cool; relieves cold work stresses and restores ductility .

  • Hot Working: 927-1177°C (1700-2150°F); reheat as necessary; avoid working below 871°C .

  • Cold Working: Good formability; can be cold drawn, rolled, and forged; work-hardening rate moderate .

  • Machining: Good machinability; requires sharp tools, positive feeds, and adequate lubrication .

  • Welding: Excellent weldability using GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), and resistance welding; matching filler metal (ERNiCu-7) recommended.

3. Applications

  • Marine Engineering: Propeller shafts, pump shafts, valve stems, marine fasteners, seawater piping components

  • Chemical Processing: Pump and valve components, reactor vessels, agitator shafts, process piping

  • Hydrocarbon Processing: Heat exchanger components, distillation column internals, refinery hardware

  • Heat Exchangers: Tube sheets, baffles, support bars for corrosive service
