AMS 4674J specification covers a corrosion-resistant nickel-copper alloy (Alloy 405 / UNS N04405) in the form of bars up to 3.00 inches (76.2 mm) in thickness, as well as forgings and forging stock of any size. Alloy 405 bar (UNS N04405) is a nickel-copper alloy with high strength and toughness, offering excellent corrosion resistance in a range of media including seawater, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, and alkalis. Due to its increased sulfur content, Alloy 405 exhibits enhanced machinability and is chiefly used for automatic screw machine stock. It is not generally recommended for other applications .
1. Product Specifications & Physical DataAlloy 405 is available in bar and forging forms specifically designed for high-speed automatic machining operations. The controlled sulfur addition (0.025-0.060%) improves chip breakage and reduces tool wear. Available Forms: Bar (round, hex, square) up to 3.00″ (76.2 mm), forgings, forging stock . Specifications: AMS 4674J, ASTM B164, ASME SB-164, UNS N04405, Werkstoff Nr. 2.4361 .

2. Fabrication & Material ComparisonAnnealing: 843-871°C (1550-1600°F) × 10-30 minutes, water quench or air cool; relieves cold work stresses and restores ductility . Hot Working: 927-1177°C (1700-2150°F); reheat as necessary; avoid working below 871°C . Cold Working: Good formability; can be cold drawn and worked; work-hardening rate moderate . Machining: Excellent machinability due to controlled sulfur addition; significantly better than standard Alloy 400 . Welding: Not recommended for welding; sulfur content can cause hot cracking .
3. ApplicationsAutomatic Screw Machine Stock: High-speed production of machined components Valve Components: Valve stems, seats, and trim for corrosive service Fasteners: Machined bolts, nuts, screws, and studs for marine and chemical environments Fittings: Precision-machined fittings for piping systems Instrumentation Components: Machined parts for process control equipment Marine Hardware: Machined components for seawater service Chemical Processing Components: Machined parts for HF acid and sulfuric acid service
