Alloy 91 is a wrought, precipitation-hardening nickel-chromium-cobalt superalloy designed for high-temperature stability and corrosion resistance. Building on the Nimonic family heritage, it features elevated chromium content combined with titanium and aluminum additions to form the strengthening gamma prime (γ') phase. This metallurgical balance ensures high tensile strength, long-term creep resistance, and ductility retention in aggressive environments up to 900°C.

Manufacturing, Processing & Competitive Comparison

Alloy 91 is designed for fabricability, though it requires controlled thermal and mechanical processing to achieve its full potential.

  • Hot Working: Effectively forged or formed within the range of 950°C to 1175°C (1742°F – 2147°F) . Consistent deformation practices are required to avoid cracking and maintain grain size control.

  • Heat Treatment & Annealing: For intermediate processing, an interstage anneal at 1150°C (2102°F) followed by air cooling or fluidized bed quenching is recommended to restore ductility. Final properties are developed through a full precipitation hardening cycle.

  • Machinability: Best machined in the fully heat-treated condition to ensure consistent chip formation and predictable tool wear.

  • Competitive Edge: Compared to Nimonic 90, the increased chromium content in Nimonic 91 shifts the performance balance toward environmental resistance without sacrificing high-temperature strength. It bridges the gap between high-strength superalloys and corrosion-resistant stainless steels.

  • Product Forms: Available from certified suppliers (ISO 9001) in Bar, Sheet, Plate, Strip, Tube, Wire, and Welding Wire to support both prototyping and production-scale manufacturing.
