2. Fabrication & Material Comparison

Nimonic® 86 offers good fabricability with appropriate techniques, though its strength and work-hardening characteristics require consideration.

  • Heat Treatment: Supplied in solution-annealed condition; annealing required after cold working to restore optimal microstructure . Typical solution treatment: 1150°C × 4 hours, air cool .

  • Welding: Excellent weldability using GTAW, GMAW, submerged-arc, and SMAW processes. Matching filler metal recommended; for non-matching applications, Ni-Co-Cr-Mo rich filler acceptable .

  • Forming: Good ductility permits conventional forming; powerful equipment recommended due to higher strength than common steels. Heavy-duty lubricants required .

  • Cold Working: Standard tooling methods applicable; plain carbon steels not recommended due to galling potential. Soft die materials and heavy lubricants reduce galling .

  • Machining: Work-hardens during machining; requires rigid setups, sharp tools, and positive feeds. Water-based coolants for high-speed operations; heavy lubricants for tapping, drilling, broaching .
