Nimonic® 105 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-cobalt-chromium superalloy with strategic molybdenum, aluminum, and titanium additions. It represents a significant advancement over Nimonic 100 series alloys, offering exceptional creep rupture strength and thermal fatigue resistance up to 950°C (1742°F). This alloy is specifically formulated for the most critically stressed rotating components in gas turbine engines, where prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures and stress demands material reliability .

2. Fabrication & Material ComparisonNimonic® 105 requires precise multistage thermal processing to develop the optimized gamma-prime precipitate distribution responsible for its high-temperature strength. Heat Treatment : Stage 1: Solution anneal at 1149°C (2100°F) × 4 hours, air cool Stage 2: Intermediate treatment at 1056°C (1925°F) × 16 hours, air cool Stage 3: Precipitation hardening at 849°C (1560°F) × 16 hours, air cool Stage 4: Final air cool to establish microstructure
Welding: Weldable using GTAW (TIG) and GMAW (MIG) processes with matching filler metal. Post-weld full heat treatment necessary to restore parent metal properties. Pre-weld cleaning essential . Forming & Hot Working: Hot Working Range: 950-1150°C (1742-2102°F) Forging: Within hot working range with controlled strain rates Cold Working: Not typically performed; all forming done at elevated temperatures
Machining: Requires heavy-duty equipment due to high strength and work-hardening tendency. Carbide tooling with positive rake angles essential. Water-based coolants for high-speed operations; heavy lubricants for drilling and tapping. Rigid setups minimize chatter .
Applications Gas Turbine Engines: Turbine blades (rotor and stator), turbine discs, nozzle guide vanes, high-temperature fasteners Aerospace: Ring sections, casings, forged components for hot sections Power Generation: Industrial gas turbine blading, high-temperature bolting Automotive: High-performance racing engine valves and turbocharger components
