ASTM B574 covers rod of low-carbon nickel-chromium-molybdenum-copper alloy (UNS N06200) for general corrosive service. Alloy C-2000 is an improved version of Alloy C-22, offering enhanced resistance to both reducing and oxidizing environments through strategic copper addition. This Ni-Cr-Mo alloy is ductile, easy to weld, and highly resistant to pitting, crevice attack, and stress corrosion cracking, making it one of the most versatile materials for chemical processing equipment.

2. Operating Conditions & Selection Criteria

  • Service Temperature: Suitable for applications from cryogenic to 400°C (752°F) in corrosive service; oxidation resistance to 1000°C (1832°F) for short-term exposure .

  • Copper Addition: 1.3-1.9% copper enhances resistance to reducing acids (sulfuric, hydrochloric, hydrofluoric) beyond C-22 capabilities .

  • Chromium Content: 22-24% chromium provides excellent resistance to oxidizing media (ferric chloride, nitric acid, wet chlorine) .

  • Low Carbon: 0.010% maximum carbon eliminates carbide precipitation, ensuring superior as-welded corrosion resistance .

  • Corrosion Resistance: Outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice attack, and stress corrosion cracking in chloride-containing environments .

  • Versatility: One of the most versatile nickel alloys, suitable for both reducing and oxidizing process streams .


3. Fabrication & Material Comparison

  • Solution Annealing: 1121-1177°C (2050-2150°F), water quench; supplied in this condition for optimal corrosion resistance .

  • Hot Finishing: Hot worked at elevated temperatures followed by solution annealing .

  • Cold Finishing: Cold drawn or rolled to achieve desired dimensions and surface finish .

  • Machining: Good machinability with sharp tools, positive feeds, and adequate coolant; work-hardening rate moderate .

  • Welding: Excellent weldability using GTAW, GMAW, and resistance welding; matching filler metal recommended; no post-weld heat treatment required .
