ASTM B564 specification covers nickel alloy forgings, including UNS N04400 (Alloy 400 / Monel 400). This nickel-copper alloy offers high strength comparable to structural steel, excellent corrosion resistance across a wide range of media, and good mechanical properties from cryogenic temperatures up to approximately 538°C (1000°F) . For service temperatures above 593°C (1100°F) where creep and rupture resistance are required, the alloy is annealed to develop controlled grain size for optimum performance.

Operating Conditions & Selection Criteria

Alloy 400 forgings are specified when designers require a nickel-copper alloy with excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in seawater, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, and reducing chemical environments.

  • Service Temperature Range: Suitable for continuous operation from cryogenic temperatures up to 538°C (1000°F); retains excellent mechanical properties at sub-zero temperatures 

  • Corrosion Resistance: Outstanding resistance to seawater, salt solutions, hydrofluoric acid (all concentrations up to boiling point), and non-oxidizing acids 

  • Chloride SCC Resistance: Excellent resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking; no susceptibility in most environments 

  • Thermal Properties: Good thermal conductivity and low electrical resistivity 

  • Magnetic Properties: Slightly magnetic at room temperature; Curie temperature range 21-49°C 

  • Fabricability: Easy to form and fabricate with no additional heat treatment requirements in annealed condition
