ASTM B333 covers plate, sheet, and strip of nickel-molybdenum alloy UNS N10675 (Alloy B-3) for general corrosive service. Alloy B-3 is an improved version of Alloy B-2, offering excellent resistance to pitting, corrosion, and stress-corrosion cracking with significantly enhanced thermal stability. Its distinguishing feature is the ability to maintain excellent ductility during transient exposures to intermediate temperatures—a critical advantage during heat treatments associated with fabrication. This nickel-molybdenum alloy withstands hydrochloric, sulfuric, acetic, formic, and phosphoric acids, as well as other non-oxidizing media .

2.  Fabrication & Material Comparison

  • Solution Annealing: 1066-1177°C (1950-2150°F), water quench; essential to maintain corrosion resistance .

  • Hot Rolling: Performed at elevated temperatures followed by solution annealing and descaling .

  • Cold Rolling: Sheet and strip produced by hot or cold rolling with intermediate solution annealing .

  • Forming: Good ductility permits forming; material should be in annealed condition .

  • Machining: Requires slow speeds, positive feeds, and adequate coolant; work-hardening rate moderate .

  • Welding: Excellent weldability using GTAW and GMAW; matching filler metal recommended; no post-weld heat treatment required .
