AMS 5553J specification covers Alloy 201 (UNS N02201) nickel in the form of sheet and strip from 0.001 to 0.250 inch (0.03 to 0.65 mm) in nominal thickness. Alloy 201 is the low-carbon version of commercially pure nickel (Alloy 200), specifically formulated with a maximum carbon content of 0.02% to prevent embrittlement and graphitization during exposure to temperatures above 315°C (600°F). These products have been used typically for parts requiring excellent corrosion resistance and/or strong magnetic properties, but usage is not limited to such applications .

 2. Fabrication & Material Comparison

  • Annealing: 704-871°C (1300-1600°F) × 10-30 minutes, air cool; relieves cold work stresses and restores softness

  • Stress Relieving: 482-538°C (900-1000°F) × 1-2 hours, air cool

  • Cold Working: Excellent formability in annealed condition; work-hardening rate moderate

  • Machining: Similar to soft steel with higher work-hardening rate; requires sharp tools, positive feeds, and heavy-duty lubricants

  • Welding: Excellent weldability using GTAW, GMAW, and resistance welding; matching filler metal (ERNi-1) recommended; surface must be clean and free of contaminants

3. Applications

  • Chemical Processing: Caustic evaporators, storage tanks, piping systems for sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide at elevated temperatures; reactor vessels for organic processes; handling equipment for fatty acids and phenols

  • Electronics: Magnetic components, transformer cores, magnetic shields, electromagnetic actuators, recording heads

  • Aerospace & Defense: Rocket motor components, missile guidance systems, electronic shielding

  • Food & Pharmaceutical: Equipment requiring product purity at elevated temperatures; processing vessels; cleaning system components

  • Industrial Manufacturing: Thermocouple sheaths, high-temperature fixtures, combustion boats

  • Battery Components: Electrode substrates, current collectors for alkaline batteries
