AMS 5542R specification covers a corrosion- and heat-resistant nickel alloy (Alloy X-750 / UNS N07750) in the form of sheet and strip up to 0.1874 inch (4.76 mm), inclusive, in thickness and plate up to 4.000 inches (101.6 mm), inclusive, in thickness. Alloy X-750 is a nickel-chromium alloy made precipitation-hardenable by the additions of aluminum and titanium.
 
It offers good resistance to corrosion and oxidation along with high tensile and creep rupture properties at temperatures up to 700°C (1300°F). Due to its excellent relaxation resistance, Alloy X-750 is highly useful for applications such as high-temperature springs and bolts. It is also widely used in gas turbines, rocket engines, nuclear reactors, pressure vessels, tooling, and aircraft structures.

Fabrication 

  • Solution Annealing: 1093-1149°C (2000-2100°F) × 1-2 hours, water quench or air cool

  • Precipitation Hardening (AMS 5542): 704°C (1300°F) × 20 hours, air cool

  • Precipitation Hardening (AMS 5598): 732°C (1350°F) × 8 hours, furnace cool to 621°C (1150°F), hold 18 hours total, air cool

  • Forming: Good formability in solution annealed condition

  • Machining: Good machinability; similar to other nickel-chromium alloys

  • Welding: Good weldability using GTAW (TIG); matching filler metal recommended
