Alloy 12 (UNS R30012) is a cobalt-chromium-tungsten alloy with higher tungsten content (8-10.5%) than Stellite 6, providing superior high-temperature properties and hardness up to 700°C. It combines excellent wear resistance, good corrosion protection, and mechanical stability in environments requiring retention of hardness under thermal and abrasive stress. This alloy is widely used for valve seats, turbine components, and cutting tools in aerospace, oil & gas, and power generation .

2. Fabrication & Material ComparisonHardfacing Methods: Suitable for PTA welding, laser cladding, oxy-acetylene, and spray and fuse processes . Machining: Difficult to machine due to high hardness; typically finished by grinding with silicon carbide or diamond wheels . Material Comparison: vs. Stellite 6: Higher tungsten content provides better high-temperature properties (700°C vs. 500°C capability); similar hardness but improved hot hardness . vs. Stellite 1: Lower hardness than Stellite 1 (45-50 HRC vs. 50-58 HRC) but better high-temperature stability . vs. Stellite 21: Superior wear resistance; lower impact resistance .
3. ApplicationsAerospace: Turbine components, engine seals, wear pads, bearing surfaces Oil & Gas: Valve seats, trim, down-hole tooling for HPHT conditions, flow control components Power Generation: Turbine blades, steam path components, erosion shields Industrial Manufacturing: High-performance cutting tools, saw tips, wear pads, extrusion dies Chemical Processing: Valve components exposed to abrasive media at elevated temperatures
